結城アイラ ― 宵待雨月/Yuuki Aira - Yoimachi Udzuki
This song is exemplary of Hata Aki’s [畑亜貴] style - extremely vague lyrics laden with imagery and pretty much incomprehensible.
To be honest, I wanted to give up on it, but I persisted with it for three reasons:
1. It’s a great learning opportunity - which would be even better if someone actually comments on the word choices I’ve made. I’m looking forward to that. Emails sent directly to me are fine too.
2. I’m not sure if it’ll ever get translated if I don’t do it (at least for some time). I’ve seen popular songs without translations for long periods of time (maybe even years).
3. This may sound silly, but I just want to finish something I started. Unlike many of the projects I have hanging around in midair.
For once I have to confess that I am not sure if this effort is exactly stellar - but all I can claim is that I did my best, and that I’m confident it’s not as bad as it can be (whether it can be better is a question for debate. I can’t decide objectively). Scant consolation, but…

秘められた思い出に 囚われ続けて
永遠を遡る なぜ出会ったの
night rain…
night rain…
night rain…
English translation
Constantly fettered by concealed memories,
I move against eternity. Why did I get to know you?
night rain…
I had been waiting alone in ignorance.
If there was another place, who would be there?
Time alone outlines the past silently,
For to be reincarnated and reborn is the destiny of Man.
After wiping away the sadness
Overflowing from my eyes,
I clutch the fragments of the love you gave me to my breast.
Bearing the color of tears,
The rain that pours endlessly
Is kind to me, for it washes away even my pain.
Constantly fettered by concealed memories,
I move against eternity. Why did I get to know you?
night rain…
I want to be able to understand what lies within the darkness someday –
And this dream-like wish still persists [1].
Even if I get lost in the crowds,
I would climb the stairs leading to the end while facing the sky,
So that our voices may reach each other.
The day when I can no longer hear the voices of
The flowers that will be blooming tomorrow approaches.
Even though I would prefer to disappear while still bearing hope of rescue,
I’ll still be waiting, despite being exhausted from evading pursuit [2].
Please give me your hand, so that I can cut myself free of eternity’s clutches.
Bearing the color of tears,
The rain has soaked through to my heart.
The rain that pours endlessly
Is kind to me, for it washes away even my pain.
Constantly fettered by concealed memories,
I move against eternity. Why did I get to know you?
night rain…
[1] Rephrased extensively, the stanza would probably mean “Though it is but wishful thinking, my desire to someday understand (the meaning of) that [something] which lies between successive periods of darkness.” A possible interpretation would be that the persona seeks to see the sky in daylight for herself, something which she is unable to do.
[2] What this stanza likely refers to is that despite the persona’s desire to simply disappear (die) in peace (while still having hope of being rescued), and despite being exhausted from evading a person who seeks to kill her, she is still waiting [for something].
[3] This song contains much imagery which is not only difficult (if not impossible) to translate, but also rather incomprehensible in the literal sense when read in the original Japanese. When appreciating the song, it might be helpful to consider it from the viewpoint of the character (Matsuri), who is practically an immortal [albeit one to whom exposure to sunlight is fatal] character haunted by sad memories of the past.
