Quote for 2/27/2007

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

智に働けば角が立つ。情に棹させば流される。意地を通せば窮屈だ。兎角に人の世は住みにくい。

夏目漱石, 《草枕》, 1906

Chi ni hatarakeba kado ga tatsu. Jō ni saosaseba nagasareru. Iji o tōseba kyūkutsu da. Tokaku ni hito no yo wa suminikui.

Natsume Soseki, Kusamakura, 1906

Use your intellect to guide you, and you will end up putting people off. Rely on your emotions, and you will forever be pushed around. Force your will on others, and you will live in constant tension. There is no getting around it—people are hard to live with.

Morning Activities

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

All right, I admit it. I didn’t sleep.

I was reading.

In particular, this article caught my attention.

I have to say that at present, I don’t really agree completely, judging by what I see and observe in school.

But it IS cause for concern.

Hence…

*HEM*

Forget I said that.

Speaking of which, after reading several blogs owned by ex-students of illustrious high schools in Singapore, I have renewed faith in our intellectual supremacy as a community.

Oh and check out this webpage. I found this immensely inspiring and depressing simultaneously.

But oh well.

Fortunately, I only have at one, at most two serious rivals in my class. ^^; *WHEW*

AN UNUSUAL SUNDAY

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Today was the penultimate (a word I learnt today, by the way, though I am using it wrongly here for fun) epitomization of のんびり (nonbiri; taking it easy). I did none of my work (not that I had much anyway).

But hey! I was working! I was like processing documents. Editing for spelling, grammar and even content problems was like, part of the job.

:D

In any case,

I AM BORED.

AS HELL.

SOMEONE SAVE ME!!!!

*Apologies to Qianqian since I couldn’t get his chocolate Negima 3

Chocolate?

Hmm.

Anyone knows where to buy nice chocolate?

Pray show me something before you try to lecture me about English.

Like a good TOEFL/GCE ‘O’/TOEIC/SAT/ACT grade or something.

Lol.

Prevalent mood for February

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

I would say it’s moroseness. And to make matters worse, so to speak, I listen to this very morosifying song quite a bit, entitled ‘undelete’ by Kawada Mami (川田まみ), and which serves as the ED of the OVA series BALDR FORCE EXE RESOLUTION (which happens to be very good, by the way).

As a result I tend to spend mornings sitting in my chair or lying down on the bed, feeling very morose (of course) and pondering about things. This morning I devoted some time to a brief reverie about the Meiji Restoration while looking at the map, but the rest of the time was of course spent in predictable, repetitive thinking about something.

What a way to spend mornings.

New Year Gathering (AT 美人 HUIMIN’S PLACE!!!)

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

I discovered one more thing about my class people today.

Apart from the fact that an astonishingly large number of cute girls happened to be assigned to our class (at current estimate FIVE), some people in class are like, REALLY rich.

That aside, it was pretty fun. Messing up the dough, chopping up cabbage and taking up space in the kitchen were part of the routine. And of course I didn’t play bridge. Or mahjong. I did eat more than a fair share of the dumplings, though.

Apart from talking on the phone (not terribly social, but I had something on my mind), brooding while swinging around on an ancient swing, singing to Jon Yee’s guitar chords, I also did some unusual stuff. Like… play chess. And teaching chess (to He Xuan). Oh did I mention that I played table tennis too? My serves were of course the best. :D (BUT GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME HUIMIN’S PLACE IS GIGANTIC ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE A TABLE TENNIS TABLE!!!)

It also happens to be Jon Yee’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY DARLING SEC-CHAN!!!), so Xiaoxue and some other cute girls were hard at work baking a cake. And someone got the brilliant idea (I mean, it IS sort of brilliant…) of getting the class to write little notes and then adding them to the cake batter. And of course Sec-chan had to peel each one out and open them and read them. I do think he swallowed one by accident, though. ^^ Naturally I scribbled some nice advice in Japanese (which he claims he can’t read because of my bad handwriting - what nonsense!) but I doubt he’s in the right frame of mind to take them. What a pity. Oh well.

Actually my class people are very nice. As in, nice people. Even Huizhen (who’s a femme fatale). Joshua-chan, Desmond-chan and Sec-chan are of course some of the nicest and coolest guys around. Esther-chan was cold as usual, but her outfit gave her double her normal moe points (which by a considerable margin puts her in first place, followed by Xiaoxue the Domesticated who’s almost ready to get herself married off with her more-than-impressive domestic skills). But anyway, back to point, MY CLASS ROCKS. Yep. Sure there are muggers around (though personified by Guan Xinyu), but they’re pretty much fun-loving, unconventional and adventurous people. I mean - people who don’t take PCME or BCME MUST have some sort of unusual, adventurous streak in them, be it out of passion or sheer weirdness. And I am really pretty fortunate to have Sec-chan in the same class (really - much as I like the others he’s the bestest guy around). I guess the batch song was right - I’m not exactly alone (unless I choose to be).

Well, what can I say? I’m really glad that I went. And I somehow hope that my presence was felt (positively, if not neutrally), and would be missed if it were gone. (As a side note, it was great to have had the chance to see Huizhen and Esther-chan all dolled up!!! *but don’t tell them!!!* :P )

General Comments on New Year

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Without a doubt, this is the most unusual and hectic New Year period I’ve ever gone through. Throughout this entire period, I actually haven’t been eating much. That is pretty understandable, given my highly advanced state of distress and confusion.

Let’s see what I’ve been up to…

1. Looking for $$$. Literally. Money that would pay for my college education.
2. Looking for someplace to work! Reading through corporate websites is no joke.
3. Shopping for a bow and other attachments - that’s Hoyt, Shibuya, Samick, and other companies to look into…
4. Reading random stuff on Wikipedia
5. Shopping at cdjapan (ordered Kawada Mami’s newest album)
6. Translating 君との明日 (haven’t finished it yet)
7. Filling in council election forms (by god they’re a real headache)
8. Brooding about getting rich and glorious and happy (plus some other more pressing problems on the side)
9. Deliberating choice of cameras
10. Running and doing other exercises
11. Talking to treasured friends and loved ones on the phone for long periods of time :D
12. Counting money. Fortunately this year’s takings are not too disappointing and my long zoom might actually be within reach for once.

But other than the fact that life isn’t exactly stressful in the conventional sense and the fact that I am pretty comfortable physically with the air conditioning on I haven’t been exactly sleeping very well or been feeling particularly happy, so to speak. But at least it isn’t exactly depression, just distress. ^^

I still haven’t decided which gathering to go for tomorrow. I guess I’ll probably just go with the class. They’re nice folk, I would say, just that I don’t get along terribly well with them. I shall like just… stop freaking them out? Perhaps that’ll work. Yeah it would. Maybe.

Clarifications!

Yes, I am drunk.

New Year bizzareness

Monday, February 19th, 2007

*hic* So this was how it went.

1. Woke up fine but with terribly messed-up hair that I wasn’t allowed to wash for some strange superstitious reason
2. Got severely carsick within minutes
3. Got even more severely carsick and developed a headache soon after reaching home
4. Experienced some pretty severe trauma soon after that and decided to go running at the gym
5. Ended up with a massive headache and took pills
6. Ate very little for dinner
7. Ended up drinking sake (15% alcohol) and ate about 15 sheets of seaweed, and three mini gummy burgers plus a considerable quantity of barbecued meat.

That’s just the beginning.

And I need a camera.
(and a bow)
